Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)
Understanding Lupus
(Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks healthy tissues, causing widespread inflammation that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain. It often presents with flares and remissions, and while the cause is unknown, it involves genetic, environmental (e.g., sunlight, infections), and hormonal factors. Lupus is more common in women, especially those of African American, Hispanic, or Asian descent, and typically starts between ages 15 and 45. Symptoms vary widely, making diagnosis challenging, but early management can prevent organ damage. At Southeastern Rheumatology Specialists, Dr. Jose Martinez, D.O., specializes in lupus care to help patients achieve remission and maintain wellness.

Common symptoms include fatigue, joint pain, a butterfly-shaped facial rash, photosensitivity, mouth sores, fever, hair loss, and organ-specific issues like kidney inflammation or chest pain. Diagnosis combines medical history, physical exams, blood tests (e.g., antinuclear antibodies, ANA), and sometimes biopsies to rule out other conditions. There is no cure, but treatments include antimalarials (e.g., hydroxychloroquine), corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, or biologics to control inflammation and symptoms, along with lifestyle measures like sun protection and stress management. Dr. Martinez offers tailored therapies, including infusion options, to manage lupus effectively.
