Ankylosing Spondylitis
Understanding
Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints, causing pain, stiffness, and potential fusion of the vertebrae over time. It often begins in the lower back and can spread upward, leading to reduced flexibility and a hunched posture. AS typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood, affecting more men than women, and may also involve other areas like the hips, shoulders, or eyes. While the exact cause is unknown, genetic factors such as the HLA-B27 gene play a role, and it can be associated with conditions like psoriasis or inflammatory bowel disease. At Southeastern Rheumatology Specialists, Dr. Jose Martinez, D.O., provides expert care for AS to help manage symptoms and maintain mobility.
Symptoms of AS include chronic lower back pain and stiffness that worsens with inactivity or at night and improves with exercise, fatigue, and possible inflammation in other joints or the eyes (uveitis). Diagnosis involves a physical exam, medical history, blood tests for inflammation markers and the HLA-B27 gene, and imaging like X-rays or MRI to detect joint changes. While there is no cure, treatments focus on pain relief and preventing progression through nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), biologics like TNF inhibitors, physical therapy to maintain posture and flexibility, and in severe cases, surgery. Dr. Martinez tailors plans including advanced therapies to improve quality of life.
